If you think the very idea of an environmentally friendly luxury yacht, means a sailboat – think again!

While a diesel driven luxury motor yacht may not be the first thing you think of when you think of an environmentally friendly vessel, there are ways to make your motoryacht “greener” and more efficient.

In fact, in recent years there has been a push to use more green technologies and green building techniques in yacht design and construction. In addition, the yachting industry has made regulatory changes on carbon impact and emissions standards.

In 2004, the EPA enacted new regulations regarding marine engine emissions. These were late updated in 2008. The new legislation has led yacht builders to try to do more to reduce fuel emissions and increase fuel efficiency.

Even if you have not totally “gone green” and purchased one of the increasingly available electric, or hybrid motor yachts, there are some things you can do to your existing boat, to make her “greener” and more energy efficient.

Power and Fuel Consumption

Of course the simplest way to reduce fuel consumption and emissions while on the water is to adjust the way you use your engines. Reducing your cruising speeds and taking shorter trips will reduce fuel usage, as will keeping your engines properly maintained.

One increasingly popular way to reduce fuel consumption, and make your yacht more energy efficient is to replace gas powered generators with solar panels. Solar panels can keep your yachts batteries charged up, while eliminating the noise and emissions of gas generators. In addition to making your boat “greener” replacing your generators with solar panels, will also reduce your repair and maintenance costs, by eliminating the costs and service hassles associated with gas generators.

If your yacht is not already equipped with LED lighting, consider replacing all incandescent lighting with LEDs.

Other Green Accessories

You can also use certain products to prevent your yachting excursion from negatively impacting the environment. For example you can install a bioremediation product such as BIO-SOK to convert hydrocarbons into safer compounds, or a device such as a bilge sock to prevent overboard discharges from your tank vent.

 Changing Your Usage Habits

There are also changes you can do to the way you use your motoryacht that can lessen her carbon foot print and environmental impact. In addition to introducing greener technologies, the yachting industry and in particular the yacht charter business, is encouraging deeper respect for the fragility of the natural world. This has led to changes in attitudes and behaviors by yacht owners and passengers alike, impacting everything from the ways they enter vulnerable areas to how they handle waste disposal on board.

Whether on a private charter, or your own vessel, there are many things you can do to lessen your yacht’s environmental impact. Try to use organic or “all-natural” products whenever possible. Particularly anything you use to clean the outside of your boat, as any of these cleaning product will run off into the water.

Keep rubbish on board in appropriate containers, and be sure to dispose of it properly when in port. Just like at home, try not to waste water while showering, doing the dishes or using the head.

As yacht owners we are blessed to be able to enjoy the sea the world over. It is incumbent on ourselves to be proper stewards of the “blue” by being more “green!”
