Remember how diligent you were when you were shopping around to purchase your luxury motor yacht? Finding the right place to keep her requires an equally meticulous search. Not only is even finding available dockage often a challenge, you need to understand that not all Marinas are the same! You can dock your yacht in an exclusive yacht club, a working shipyard, or a private dock. Which is right for you depends not only on availability, but a lot on how you intend to enjoy your boat.
Are you looking for a place just to dock your boat, or do you want her in a marina where she can also be serviced and maintained, or are you more interested in the dynamic social atmosphere, and the exclusive amenities such as bars, restaurants, pools and tennis courts of a yacht club? In addition, you will need to consider things like security and proximity to the waters and destinations you intend to cruise.
You also need to consider access to the marina itself, how will you be getting there when you want to take your yacht out, and how much of a problem will commuting there be? Once you have a better idea of what you are looking for in dockage, you will then be able to narrow down the best possibilities in your area. But, once you have your list of potential marinas in hand, that is when your homework really begins!
Choosing a Marina
Choosing a marina, and/or dock space within that marina requires careful consideration, particularly for an upscale motor yacht – it is not like just arriving at a destination and parking your car! Every yacht is different, just as every dock is different. Your yacht will have size and style specifics that will determine where it can and cannot be accommodated. You need to make sure that the marina has channels big enough and deep enough for easy access and egress as you make for open water or return. Here in South Florida, proximity to bridges with “on demand,” or scheduled openings is also a concern.
There are a few thing that you want in any marina. Anyplace you are docking your yacht for any considerable length of time needs to be safe, secure, protected from the elements, and have a friendly and responsive staff.
A marina is more than just a place to “park your boat,” it is more like your yacht’s “home.” In that respect, you should expect it to be comfortable and inviting. Looking at it that way, “friendly neighbors” that share your interests, access to shopping, restaurants, and nightlife, all may come into play. If you intend to spend a lot of time on your yacht while she is docked, it will be really important that you find dockage near owners of similar yachts with similar interests. You do not want to be next to a bunch of all night partiers, if you want to relax, or spend quiet time with your family, and vice-versa. Pick a marina with your kind of crowd.
