As yacht brokers and charter brokers we are often asked “what is the most important feature to have on a luxury yacht to ensure you get everything you want out of the ownership experience?” The answer might surprise you. It’s your captain and crew!
The right crew can make or break your yacht charter or voyage, and choosing your captain and crew can be a decision as difficult as choosing the make and model of your motor yacht.
Fortunately, with some proper guidance, finding a crew can be a lot easier. One of the most common ways people select a crew is by following the recommendation of a friend or relative. It is a common strategy, and on the surface it is a good idea, but it can also be a common mistake. Unless that friend has the exact same yacht as yours, the exact same desires as yours, and the exact same personality as yours, what turned out to be the perfect captain and crew for him, may not be the same for you!
What to Look for In Captain and Crew
Of course when you are looking for a Captain there are certain basic things you want to consider such as licensing and experience. Check with your insurance company for any specific license required for your particular size of motor yacht. If you are planning on signing up for a charter income program, there are specific licensing requirements for a Captain of a chartered yacht that differ from a yacht that will only be used recreationally.
It should go without saying that you want a captain who is experienced, but what kind of experience. You want someone who has worked on the size and type of vessel you own, as well as a Captain who has spent a lot of time navigating the waters you will most likely be cruising. Similarly, if your yacht has some kind of new state-of-the-art propulsion system, you want a chief engineer and engineering staff that is familiar with that system and your yacht’s engines.
Beyond those obvious considerations, you need to think about your personality, and the type of Captain you want and would best “get along” with. You will be spending a lot of time on board with your Captain and his crew, and you want the experience to be a good one for all of you. Are you the type of person that expects your crew to be outgoing, and leading your guests in conversations, starting spontaneous “Sea Shanty” sing-a-longs on the flybridge, or do you prefer a quiet crew that is barely noticeable until they are needed?
A good match between your personality and your Captain’s could be the most important consideration in staffing your vessel.
