From “Captain Nemo” to “Captain Kirk,” there has always been something heroic and romantic about a ship’s captain. That sense of adventure and mystery also applies to your motor yacht’s captain. “Adventure,” because he or she will be largely responsible for your seafaring adventures of a lifetime, and “mysterious,” because many people may not be sure exactly what a yacht captain does!
Of course you know that a yacht captain is responsible for driving your yacht, navigation, and ensuring that you and your guests get to where you are going safely and efficiently. But, the Captain has many more responsibilities than that, and the larger your luxury motor yacht, the bigger and more important role the yacht captain plays.
Regardless of the size of the yacht, the Captain’s job is all-encompassing, and his responsibilities are huge.
The smaller your vessel, the more hands on your Captain is likely to be. As your yacht gets larger, the more crewpersons it will require, and the Captain will delegate more tasks, but that does not make the job any less demanding.
The Captain has full responsibility for the crew, the tenders, the water toys, and of course the guests! The engineer, the mates, and every crew member falls under the ultimate command of the Captain.
Yet ultimately of course, the Captain still must yield to the owner when it comes to all major decisions. But he must be ready, willing and able to provide expert advice to the owner on every aspect of running the yacht. The Captain must be equal parts CEO, Manager, and Diplomat!
The daily tasks the Captain is responsible for generally include:
- Safe navigation and operation of the yacht
- Helping to maintain the operational budget, this is even a more vital role if the yacht is in a charter income program
- Managing money, handling expenses, payroll and other accounting duties
- In command of all crew, and crew related decisions
- Responsible for upkeep and maintenance of the vessel (along with engineering staff)
- Overseeing all repairs, upgrades and refits
- Is the “Master of Ceremonies” or “host” during any parties or other on-board events
The Captain is also responsible for documentation. You have heard of the “Captain’s Log?” This is a very, very important document. Your Captain must accurately and rigorously document just about everything that happens aboard the yacht during any voyage. The Captain’s Log is a meticulous and formal record.
Choosing a Captain and On Demand Yachting
Of course a Captain must be an experienced seaman. Anyone capable of captaining a luxury motor yacht will have vast experience with ships and their operation. They will have likely worked their way on up through the ranks either in commercial, or industrial marine operations, or the military. Captains must be proven leaders, who can manage crew as well as gain the respect and confidence of the owner and all aboard.
