Yacht runs aground

Earlier this month, the luxury motor yacht, Bellissima, ran aground in Pender Harbour, British Columbia. By all accounts the accident occurred due to “human error.” The duty officer apparently misjudged the entrance to the harbor.

The hull was compromised below the water line and the motor yacht took on water and began to list. As the aft of the engine compartment continued to flood, the captain put out a mayday call. The local Coast Guard response was swift. They rendered assistance with pumping out the water, and were able to refloat the yacht.

The hole was patched and the yacht seemed to be floating normally as she anchored near the shore waiting further inspection.

Fortunately, no one on board the yacht was injured in the grounding, and local officials said there was no fuel spilled or other environmental damage to the surrounding area.

These kinds of incidents are rare, but they do occur. The fact that the passengers and crew of the Bellissima were unharmed, and that the yacht was relatively unscathed, and there was no damage to the area, speaks volumes to the competency of her captain, crew, and their preparedness to deal with emergencies.

It is very easy to take your captain and crew for granted. Most luxury yacht owners think their main goal is to get you from point A to point B, and see that your guests have a good time. But, in reality, their main goal is to make sure that you all get to and from port safely!

That is why deciding on your crew, is probably one of the most important decisions you can make regarding the operation of your yacht!
