Does your boat’s engines have an alcohol problem? No, I am not talking about what could happen if a somewhat inebriated charter guest pours a Pina Colada in your tender’s gas tank!
There are many reasons to only use marine fuel in a boat engine, but, one of the main ones is because automobile fuel contains up to 10% ethanol. That is OK for cars, but a gas engine is not necessarily a gas engine, and ethanol can damage outboard motors and other marine engines. Ethanol can clog carburetors or foul fuel lines if it sits in a marine engine too long. We service and repair outboards and tender engines, and I would say almost half the time that we see a problem with a clogged or gummed up carburetor, ethanol is the cause.
In fact, according to Boating Industry magazine, 87 percent of boat dealers, marinas and boat engine manufacturers who they surveyed, said they have seen engine damage caused by ethanol. Of course the best way to avoid this problem is to only use a fuel such as Rec 90 marine gasoline that is ethanol-free. Rec 90 is a 90 octane unleaded gas that has been custom blended for use in recreational/marine engines which can be damaged by the ethanol found in other gasolines. Typical automotive fuel contains 10% ethanol.
If you do not have access to Rec 90, and must use regular gasoline, avoid keeping it in your boat’s engine for any extended length of time, and add a stabilizer. A fuel stabilizer will only help when you fill up with fresh fuel, it cannot fix, or rejuvenate old ethanol fuel in the tank that may have already started to degrade. Stabilizer may help, but the best way to avoid the corrosive problems that can be caused by ethanol is to avoid its use altogether.
