Reports of pirate attacks on luxury motor yachts are still relatively rare. However, by its very nature, a motor yacht is a target, and there remain many “high risk areas” (HRAs) identified by worldwide maritime authorities.
That is why most yacht owners take security seriously, and invest heavily in security systems to protect their vessels and their passengers from criminal activity, both when docked or on the high seas. Here are some of the latest in high-tech security and anti-pirate technology (ATP) packages specifically designed for yachts.
Small Target Radar – Sometimes also called small target detection systems, these are specifically designed to pick up small fast moving targets such as the skiffs typically used by pirates. Ordinary marine radar can only detect much larger targets.
Night Vision Cameras or FLIR – Recommended to be combined with small target radar, night vision cameras and infrared or thermal imaging radar such as FLIR, extend visibility in dark or foggy conditions.
Non-lethal deterrents – Most maritime security professionals do not recommend that you carry firearms on board your yacht, however there are a variety of highly effective “non-lethal” deterrents available. These range from water cannons, to high-decibel acoustical devices, to blinding laser lights, and even a slippery ooze that makes boarding your yacht difficult or impossible.
The Citadel – The Citadel is an example of an on board “panic room.” It is a watertight, impenetrable room with full external communications and, if possible, control of main engines.
Ballistic curtains – These sheets of cloth made of ballistic materials such as Kevlar, can deflect bullets, or slow them down to the point where they do less harm.
On Demand keeps you safe and secure
These kinds of systems are usually included with your yacht when she is initially built or designed, but if you have an existing yacht, and think you may be traveling into troubled waters, our On-demand technicians can retrofit any security device or system you may be thinking about.
Your luxury motor yacht faces the same kinds of threats from thieves, burglars, and other criminals as your home, car or business. Maybe even more so, since by its very nature, a luxury motor yacht is a high-profile target.
However, you can minimize your risks by taking security seriously and following some commonsense crime prevention measures.
