The real world duties of your yacht’s captain, are to be taken very serious. Your captain is responsible for navigating and driving your yacht, of course, but more importantly ensuring that you and your guests get to where you are going safely and efficiently.
With that having been said, there has always been something a bit heroic and fascinating about a ship’s captain, that has put them “at the helm” of many fictional adventures. Again, never to take the role of a yacht captain lightly, as the holidays approach, we thought you might enjoy this light-hearted look at our list of the Top 10 Fictional Captains of All Time.
Captain Jack Sparrow – Johnny Depp’s turn as the swaggering Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has become legendary! One part sot, one part hero, Depp has brought a new depth and dimension to the character in each of the four Pirates films thus far.
Captain Nemo – Not every Captain on this list is memorable for being heroic, some are somewhat unscrupulous like Jack Sparrow, others are downright nefarious, such as 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea’s Captain Nemo. Captain Nemo is the iconic “anti-hero.” He is at the same time the strong and resolute leader and a scientific genius, but he is also driven by a thirst for vengeance.
Captain Kangaroo – Whether or not Bob Keeshan’s Captain Kangaroo came to his “rank” on the seas or not, is immaterial to the years and years he spent delighting children on his TV show, and thus deserves a spot on this list.
Captain Ahab – Another Captain whose claim to fame is less than heroic, is the obsessed captain of the Pequod in Melville’s classic Moby Dick. Ahab’s tyranny and his megalomaniacal desire to kill the white whale Moby Dick, has become synonymous with obsessive desire for vengeance.
Captain Kirk – William Shatner’s beloved “space cowboy,” Captain Kirk, is the epitome of the heroic captain. Good looking, strong, brave, smart, a proven leader, every woman wants him, and every man wants to be him! As great a captain as Kirk is, he still understands the importance of teamwork and support of a good crew and his invaluable First Mate, Mr. Spock. (Honorable Mention to Patrick Stewart’s Captain Piccard, so we do not raise the ire of a second “generation” of Trekkers!)
Captain Morgan – Captain Morgan, the colorful mascot of the rum of the same name, is based on the real-life “privateer,” Sir Henry Morgan, which is why the various labels of this fine Puerto Rican rum bear the slogan “To Life, Love and Loot.” What yacht owner, and lover of the sea, can argue with that!
Captain Stubing – Captain Merrill Stubing was the iconic captain of the “Love Boat” as played for for nine years by Gavin MacLeod. As captain of the cruise ship, the “Pacific Princess,” MacLeod not only presided over the romantic hijinks of the guests and crew, but boosted the popularity of cruising in general, and the bottom line of Princess Cruises, specifically.
Captain Smollett – Captain Alexander Smollett is the captain of the schooner Hispaniola, in Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel of piracy and intrigue, Treasure Island. While temperamental and sometimes even brutal, Smollett is depicted as a maritime captain par excellence, and is eventually victorious against his rival, the mutinous “captain” Long John Silver.
Captain Crane – What would you get if you took Captain Kirk, and put him at the helm of a futuristic submarine instead of a Starship? Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea’s captain of the Seaview, of course – Captain Crane. Each week on the classic Irwin Allen TV series of the 60s, David Hedison as Captain Lee Crane would lead his intrepid crew against adversaries as varied as sea monsters to Russian spies!
Captain America – While not a sea captain at all, no list of fabled captains could possibly be complete without Captain America. The living embodiment of American strength and values, Captain America has been standing up to bullies and doing what’s right since 1941, and is now one of the most beloved and pivotal characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as played by Chris Evans.
