As a luxury motor yacht owner, you know that one of the primary responsibilities of your yacht crew, is keeping you, your family, and guests safe. But what about the safety of your crew?

In 2016 there were several reports of the death and/or injuries of yacht crewpersons. The maritime agencies involved in the incidents all agreed that there were some basic commonalities in all of the reported incidents. Here is a list of some of the most common concerns regarding crew safety aboard a luxury yacht.

  • Implementation of safety guidelines – A common issue resulting in crew injuries is a failure to comply with recommended safety guidelines. Investigators have found that all yacht crew personnel tend to be aware of ISM Codes (International Safety Management Code from the International Maritime Organization), and those put out by other maritime agencies, but often fail to put them into practice.
  • Create a culture of safety – Related to the above issue, maritime safety authorities say that a “culture of safety” needs to be created on board from the top down, with an owner, and a captain who are committed to the safe operation of the vessel. Such a culture should include routine drills and inspection of all safety gear, and practice of the safe operation of equipment, such as the anchor and the windlass that can be common causes of injury.

  • Learn from mistakes – In the unfortunate event that there is an accident involving a crew member on board, it is imperative that a thorough “post incident” report and analysis is conducted so that similar accidents can be avoided in the future.
  • Personal Responsibility – Again, this grows out of creating that culture of safety, but all crew persons must be aware of how to take personal responsibility, not only for their own safety, but for their shipmates. That means “watching each other’s backs,” and reporting or dealing with potentially hazardous situations as soon as they arise.
