If you are considering a refit, makeover, or any kind of upgrade to your luxury motor yacht, and she is not already equipped with LED lighting, its time you “saw the light,” and made the switch.
Traditional, or “incandescent lights,” work by pushing a lot of electricity through a resistor that is enclosed in a vacuum. This resistor, or “filament”, gets so hot from the current that it glows white, and only the absence of oxygen in the encapsulated bulb, prevents it from instantly burning up. While it was a remarkable breakthrough for the time, revolutionizing the way we lived, it is a very inefficient system. Only about 5% of the energy it takes to power the bulb is released as light. The rest is mostly turned into heat, as you should well know if you ever tried to change a typical 60-watt bulb before allowing it to cool down!
LED lights on the other hand, are much more efficient. LED lights operate at lower temperatures, use far less energy, and specific to their advantages on boats and yachts, they are far less sensitive to vibrations. Overall, they will last far longer than conventional incandescent bulbs. They also do not contain small amounts of toxic mercury, an environmental disposal hazard associated with fluorescent and compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) lights. LEDs may cost a bit more, but are worth their premium price in the long run.
Marine LED Lighting
LEDs also afford far more styles, shapes and types of lights and lighting systems, than do their incandescent counter parts. For all of these reasons, they have become an integral part of most modern luxury motor yacht designs.
Marine LEDs first started popping up as indicator lights, because, when the technology was first introduced, only singular diodes could be used, which made LEDs impractical for other purposes such as cabin lighting, spotlights, etc. With the perfection of “clusters” of LEDs in a single fixture, that has all changed, and the possibilities of using LED lighting on your boat are practically limitless.
But again, the main reason to upgrade or retrofit to LED lighting for your yacht, is the truly astounding energy savings. Power is a premium on a motor yacht, and with more and more electronics and gadgets on board these days, modern motor yachts are increasingly power hungry. According to Yachting Magazine, on a typical 73 foot cruiser, the entire lighting specification using LEDs draws less than 7 amps of electrical current, versus 62 amps for the equivalent in a halogen/incandescent lamp configuration.
And remember, LEDs also give off far less heat than their incandescent or halogen lighting counterparts, which means you will also draw less power for your AC system!
A full conversion from conventional lighting to LED lighting for your vessel could be an expensive prospect, however, the long-term rewards, in terms of energy efficiency and lower maintenance usually make the investment worthwhile.
