You have surely heard the expression, “the devil is in the details.” Nowhere is that more true than when it comes to “detailing” your motor yacht.

Detailing is the thorough cleaning of your yacht, and it plays a vital role in preserving the life of your boat. A luxury motor yacht is exposed to a very harsh and damaging environment of wind, sun and sea. This takes its toll on your vessel’s surfaces, some of which are far more delicate that others.

Detailing can make your yacht look great, but marine detailing is not just about merely enhancing your yacht’s beauty. Detailing is as much about making your yacht gleam with show-room perfection, as it is about protecting and preserving that aesthetic allure for years to come.

For example, keeping the gelcoat from fading and cracking will certainly extend the life of your vessel. Not only that, precision cleaning and the application of protectants and sealers, will preserve your paint job, as well as save you money on more costly repairs down the road. The same goes for the interior detailing of your yacht. Keeping leather seating as well as woodwork and other surfaces, clean and protected and free from wear, will extend the life, and help to preserve the value of your motor yacht, when it comes time to sell.

Also, if you have your boat available for charter, you can expect more clients, and earn greater charter income if she looks in tip-top shape.

Why Should You Have Your Luxury Motor Yacht Detailed?

So what exactly does detailing your yacht entail? As you know, your boat is subject to very harsh conditions, even when she is docked, let alone what she faces underway. These conditions of salt, wind and weather play havoc with the exposed surfaces of fiberglass, wood, metal, and upholstery of your yacht.

Detailing helps to clean and preserve all of these surfaces. Yachts docked here in South Florida, or other tropical zones in particular, can age before their time, if they are not properly detailed and maintained.

So what is proper detailing, and how should you expect whoever provides this service to do it right?

First off, the job of detailing starts with thoroughly rinsing every surface with fresh water. This will remove any loose dirt and grime that has accumulated on the surface. Rinsing should been done from the flybridge on down, so water drains off naturally.

Then comes the soap step. There are special marine soaps that are used specifically for the surfaces of motor yachts, and these should be used as opposed to any other kind of soap or detergent. The wrong kind of soap can actually strip the gel coat of your boat, and/or have a negative impact in the environment.

Of course after the rinsing and washing step, everything needs to be thoroughly dried. The best marine detailers will only hand-dry with specialized chamois.

Full detailing service should involve extensive cleaning of all of the exterior surfaces of your boat, including leather, vinyl, metal, decking and non-skid surfaces, and all of the windows and glass. After thorough cleaning, you should expect professional application of marine wax with a high speed power buffer. Professional detailing should also include UV treatment of all external seating and upholstery, all metal surfaces shined and polished, and the helm completely cleaned.

A good professional detail should also include compounding, to remove oxidation from the gel coat.

How Often Should You Have Your Boat Waxed and Detailed?

How often you should have your yacht detailed as described, depends on where she is docked, and how she is used. Of course, a good rinse-down should be done upon your return to dock from any outing. Generally speaking, complete waxing and detailing should be done at least 2 to 3 times per year, more often if your boat is part of a charter fleet. And of course you would want your yacht completely detailed before you take her out to a boat show, or otherwise put her up for sale.
