Even people who could afford a luxury motor yacht, shouldn’t have to spend more on marine fuel than they have to. In fact, fuel is probably the largest expense of motor yacht ownership, with an average yearly cost of about $2000-2500 per foot, or about $150,000 for a 70ft yacht!

Here are eight ways to increase fuel economy and decrease your annual cost of marine fuel.

Lose some weight – No, not you, but your boat. Unload any unnecessary items; the heavier your boat is, the more fuel it will consume.

Reduce drag – Just like when cruising down the highway in your car, objects on the top of your boat can create excessive drag and reduce fuel economy. In order to prevent this, when possible, remove canopies or other such items. Also, the design of your yacht matters when it comes to drag; the smoother and cleaner her lines, the better the fuel economy. Also, whenever possible keep your tender aboard rather than towing it, to avoid drag and reduce your fuel consumption.

Keep it clean – Keeping your hull clean of debris, dirt, and marine life will improve your fuel economy. This is best achieved with the use of anti-fouling paint.

Keep your engine properly tuned – Routine maintenance of your engines is a key factor in obtaining maximum fuel economy.

Slow down!  – It may seem an obvious tip, but one great way to stop consuming so much fuel is to throttle back a bit. Take some time to experience more of the pleasure of being on the open sea. Cutting your speed is one of simplest ways there is to improve fuel economy.

Avoid idling – Like running too fast, idling unnecessarily, or for extended periods of time, burns a lot of fuel. You are better off cutting your engines when stopped.

Use additives – Unfortunately, due to environmental regulations, most non-diesel marine fuel contains varying degrees of ethanol. That ethanol can be harsh on both your boat’s engine and your fuel economy. But you can boost fuel efficiency and protect critical engine parts from the effects of ethanol, with the use of additives.

Treat your propellers properly – Just like the hull, keeping your props clean and free of marine life, will improve their efficiently and increase fuel economy. It’s also essential to check the tracking and balance on your prop, along with the alignment. Misalignment can also increase fuel consumption.
