If you are going to be at sea for an extended period of time aboard your luxury motor yacht, does that mean you have to give up those six-pack abs, or your bikini body? Of course not! You can still work out and stay in shape while aboard your yacht, but, it can be challenging, and may take some custom equipment, and/or some creativity.

While some superyachts of course, are so large, that they have fully-equipped gyms or health clubs on-board, that may not be the case for the more common motor yachts in the 80 to 100 foot range. But, that does not mean you need to give up your commitment to exercise.

Even if your yacht is not equipped with a gym, chances are it is loaded with computers and other high-tech electronics. That means you have a great opportunity to use virtual gaming consoles such as the Nintendo Wii Fit, or some of the interactive dance or rock-n-roll jamming games made for more conventional consoles. Or, you can even go the less “high-tech” route and bring along any number of fitness or workout DVDs to watch and use aboard.

If you are on a somewhat smaller yacht that has no room for a gym or any significant exercise gear, the TRX Suspension Trainer is an ideal anywhere, anytime workout.  Specialized bands use your own bodyweight to provide an incredible strength training workout. The bands allow you to do multiple reps of core strengthening activities, using your body weight as resistance, that you could not do as well, or as much, without the TRX, specifically, push-ups, squats, lunges, as well as dead-lifts, chest presses — just about anything you can do on typical exercise machines.

The TRX was invented by a former Navy SEAL to keep his team pumped, primed and ready, while deployed, so if it can work well on a naval troop carrier, it can certainly be used to keep you and your yacht crew in tip-top shape!

Exercise Equipment Ideal for Yachts

If you yacht does have the space, there is some workout gear that either has been specifically made for, or is otherwise ideal for use at sea. Here are a few good examples.

Technogym MyRun treadmill – The Technogym MyRun treadmill is rugged and stabile, which makes it great for an onboard running machine. But, it is also loaded with a lot of “smart” technology that can link it to your FitBit, or create customized playlists to enjoy tunes during your work out.

Bowflex SelectTech 1090i adjustable dumbbells – Space is always a concern when bringing gym gear aboard your motor yacht. That is why we love these adjustable dumbbells from Bowflex. The Bowflex SelectTech system allows you to replace up to 34 barbells and free weights, with just one set – making them the ideal yacht weights. Simply turn the dial on the side, and you can change the resistance from 4kg all the way up to 41kg.

Cybex Bravo All-in-One – Again, with space being a concern, if you want an all in one, “universal” type gym machine to use on your yacht, you need look no further than the ultra-compact, Bravo All-in-One. It offers hundreds of different movements that can be used to build pure muscle strength as well as train for specific sports, such as golf or tennis, making it the ideal solution for staying at the top of your game while at sea. And, according to Superyacht gym designers, Gym Company Marine, Cybex is one of the best brands for onboard gyms due to their custom coloring options and use of durable materials that make the devices ideal for both enclosed and open air spaces.

Of course, if you do not have the space at all, or do not want to clutter up your yacht with gym equipment, you can always stay in shape by snorkeling, swimming, scuba diving, or taking along some “manpowered” water toys such as kayaks or water-bikes.
